Abstract: The zone-centre infrared and Raman phonon modes for the inverse spinel structure compounds MIn₂S₄ (M = Fe and Ni) have been calculated by using the rigid-ion model. The interatomic interaction in the octahedral bonding is stronger than the interatomic interaction in the tetrahedral bonding. It is also found that the compound NiIn₂S₄ is more ionic in comparison to FeIn₂S₄.
