Abstract: The Lienard-Wiechert potentials have been applied to calculate the close electric fields due to lightning return stroke above a finitely conducting earth. A realistic return stroke model has been used. It is found that this approach modifies the initial peak fields by as much as 24% and also changes the time to rise to the peak electric fields at close distances. There is no significant change in the fields at distances beyond 1 km.
