Title: MT index and the influence of a time delay associated with bounce motion

Abstract: The magnetotail (MT) index at the onsets of 22 isolated substorms that took place in the solar maximum years 1978 and 1979 has been calculated. The expected correlation between the MT and the tail magnetic field was not obtained at these onsets. The result can be explained on the basis of bounce motion of particles between their mirror points. It is also suggested that a transmission delay dependent on the bounce period can have a greater influence on the derivation of MT index. The delay is calculated for different trajectories of particles. The MT is also found to show no significant correlation with plasma sheet parameters at the onsets and the reason for this is discussed.
