Title: Periodic orbit analysis for HeH2+ in three dimensions

Abstract: A systematic analysis of periodic orbits (POs) for HeH2+ in three dimensions has been carried out on the McLaughlin-Thompson-Joseph- Sathyamurthy potential energy surface. Continuation/bifurcation diagrams for the system are reported over a range of energy values . It is shown that the different POs are related to the symmetric (S), asymmetric (A) and bending (B) modes. While the A mode is alternately stable and unstable over a range of energies, the S and B modes are stable for energies below zero and they become unstable for energies above zero. Classical chaos in the system is traced to period doubling and saddle-node bifurcations. The implications of the behaviour of the POs for the quantum mechanical reactive scattering resonances are pointed out.
