dc.description.abstractThe oxidation of sulfacetamide, a sulfonamide drug, by alkaline diperiodatocuprate(III) has been studied at 298 K and at constant ionic strength. The reaction is first order in diperiodatocuprate(III) and has less than unit order in sulfacetamide concentration. The rate constants increase with increase in alkali concentration and decrease with increase in periodate concentration. A mechanism has been proposed wherein monoperiodatocuprate(III) is the active species. The reaction constants involved in the different steps of the mechanism and the activation parameters for the slow step have been computed.en_US
