Abstract: Two proteases, viz. Degummase and Protease ‘A’ Amano 2, were used for biopolishing different varieties of bleached and semi-bleached tasar silk fabrics. Gum was completely removed by enzyme treatment in bleached tasar silk samples, whereas some gum was left on semi-bleached and unbleached samples. Improvement in lustre was observed in case of all the varieties of tasar silk fabrics due to the cleaning of the fibre surface by the enzyme. Degummase gave a higher weight loss with all the varieties of tasar silk and is more effective than Protease ‘A’ Amano 2.
