Abstract: The tenacity values of bundles of jute fibres belonging to different varieties have been predicted from the structure of their fibre bundles as seen in the tra nsverse section of jute stems and the length of the constituent ultimate cells by multivariate regression analysis. Jute plant stems having fibre bundles compri sing greater number of compactly arranged long and fine ultimate cells give fi bres of higher strength when retted under standard conditions.
