Abstract: Benzimidazole and its simple 2-substituted derivatives react with chromium (VI) reagents such as CrO3, K2Cr2O7, K2CrO4 or pyridinium dichromate in aq. acetic acid at RT to yield beautifully coloured, yellow to yellowish-orange products. Spectral and analytical data have been used to characterize the products. Structures for these products as benzimidazolium dichromate have been assigned on the basis of single crystal X-ray analyses.
