Abstract: Photoreduction of benzophenone analogues 1 to benzopinacol analogues 2 in 2-propanol and diethyl ether have been studied under various experimental conditions. Two analogues namely 1,2-ethanediol 1,2-bis (3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenyl 2a and 1,2-ethanediol, 1,2-bis (l,4-benzodioxin)-1,2 diphenyl 2b have been isolated and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The structures of 2a and 2b indicate that these two are programmed molecular systems with complementary recognition groups that contain information for the self assembly into supramolecular ribbons.
