Abstract: The hydraulic design of ash disposal pipelines is strongly dependent on the properties of ash as well as the rheological behaviour of the ash slurries. The various solid properties of fly ash and bed ash collected from different power plants spread across the country have been investigated. Further, the rheological behaviour of the various samples has been quantified over a wide range of solid concentration. The present investigations show that the properties of different ash samples (both fly ash and bed ash) vary over a wide range. Similarly, the rheological parameters (yield stress and relative viscosity) of the slurries at different concentrations exhibit a wide variation. Thus, the design of ash disposal pipeline has to take into account the wide variation in some of the rheological parameters in order to optimise the energy and water consumption.
