Abstract: Kinetics of oxidation of hippuric acid with phosphato-Bi(V) complex have been investigated in phosphoric acid –HClO4 mixture. The reaction is first order in [oxidant] and fractional order — each in [hippuric acid] and [H+]. Ionic strength has inverse effect on the reaction rate. The effect of added [Bi(III)] is found to be negligible. An outer sphere mechanism consistent with the observed kinetics has been proposed and rate law is derived as
