|Abstract:||A sensitive spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of molybdenum(VI) using 3-hydroxy-2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-propionyi-4H-chromen-4-one (HMPC). The metal ion forms a yellow complex with the reagent in acetic acid medium. Spectral data shows the formation of 1:2 species with λmax value at 416 nm. Beer's law is obeyed over the concentration range of 0-2.5 μg Mo ml-1. The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity are calculated to be 5.56×104 l mol-1 cm-1 and 0.0017 μg Mo cm-2 respectively, at 416 nm. For ten replicate determinations of 1 μg Mo ml-1, the standard deviation was 0.008 with a relative mean error of ±0.08%. The method is simple, selective, precise and rapid and has been applied satisfactorily to the determination of molybdenum in various steels and a wide variety of synthetic samples.|
