Abstract: The dependence of refractive index for I-VII, II-VI, III-V semiconductors including alkali halides on the energy band gap and the optical electronegativity difference has been studied. The relationships have been established for estimating the refractive index of materials. In addition, an interrelation between the energy band gap, polarizability and magnetic susceptibility has also been investigated. The computed values of the parameters are then compared with the literature values.
