Abstract: p- Nitroaniline in the solid state reacts with maleic anhydride forming maleimic acid. Spectroscopic techniques supported the formation of this reaction product. The reaction products obtained from solution and solid-state have same stoichiometry but different crystal structures. It is found that during solid-state reaction maleic anhydride diffuses towards p-nitroaniline. There are number of ways through which maleic anhydride can diffuse into the crystal lattice of p-nit roaniline but the surface migration plays a prominent role.
