Title: Development and Characterization of Release Profile of Nifedipine as an Effective Controlled Release System

Abstract: To develop an effective controlled drug release system, preparation of microcapsule formulation of nifedipine coated with ethylcellulose, eudragit RS and eudragit RL is reported. Coacervation and phase separation (CPS) technique involving non-aqueous manufacturing vehicles is utilized for the encapsulation of nifedipine in different core-coat ratios without applying high temperature. It is observed that microcapsules coated with eudragit RL exhibit maximum encapsulation efficiency. Drug release kinetics from all the sponge like structured microcapsules follow a matrix controlled mechanism of Higuchi Model rather than the same based on the diffusion process of monoexponential model of the first order. The release rate, dissolultion efficiency and permeabil ity constant could be controlled by the type and concentration of the polymer loading. Controlled release microcapsules produced by the present method can provide characteristic advantages over conventional method of preparing a reservoir device of drug, such as fluid-bed coating or coating of beads.
