Abstract: The paper describes enzymatic reaction with emulsion liquid membrane in a batch system. Hydrolysis of L-phenylalanine methyl ester by α- chymotrypsin enzyme was selected as a model reaction system and L-phenylalanine was selected as model solute. A facilitated transport mechanism for the substrate and product across the membrane was identified and the effect of the three experi mental variables, viz. pH of the external phase, speed of the agitator and the enzyme concentration on the transport rate of substrate and product were studied. It was observed that the pH of the external phase controls the transport of the product. In fact, zwitterionic character of the amino acids depends on the pH and thus effects the transport of the product. The speed of the agitator is the controlling factor for the transport of substrate from the external to the internal phase as well as the swelling of the emulsion. The rate of the enzymatic reaction accelerates with the enzyme concentration. The results show that emulsion liquid membrane has potential for production of amino acid by enzymatic hydrolysis.
