Abstract: Currently practiced chrome tanning methods lead to discharge of large quantities of chrome bearing effluents. This review critically analyses the possible causes for the presence of large amounts of Cr(III) in the tannery effluents along with scientific solutions for enhancing the uptake of Cr(III) by skin protein during tanning and hence minimizing the discharge of Cr(III) into the environment.
