Abstract: Catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over PdO/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst has been carried out. PdO/Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 catalyst is found to be highly active in the oxidation of volatile organic compounds and the order of catalytic activity is methanol > toluene > acetone > butyl acetate > butanone> acetonitrile > ethylenediamine. During oxidation of butyl acetate, n-butyl alcohol and butyl aldehyde were observed as intermediates. In the case of other oxidations, the carbon containing intermediates were negligible. During oxidation of toluene-butyl acetate mixtures, toluene oxidation was suppressed as long as butyl acetate was present in the reaction mixture, while butyl acetate oxidation was improved by toluene. Water vapour inhibits the toluene oxidation, but not butyl acetate oxidation.
