Abstract: A simple, highly sensitive and selective method for determination of zirconium in trace amounts has been developed which is based on the reaction of 6-chloro-3-hydroxy-2-(2'-furyl)-4H-chromen-4-one with the metal ion under alkaline conditions.The coloured complex formed is quantitatively extractable into carbon tetrachloride, whose λmax lies at 428 nm. The procedure eliminates interference due to several metal ions and obeys Beer's law in the range 0.0-0.5 μg Zr ml-1 with a Sandell sensitivity of 0.0015 μg Zr cm-2.
