Abstract: An in vitro propagation protocol for Schweinfurthia papilionacea A. Br. (Family: Scrophulariaceae), an important medicinal plant useful in the treatment of diabetes, was established. Seeds treated with 1 mg/mL gibberellic acid for 72 h gave the maximum percentage of germination, which were subsequently grown on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium for elongation of seedlings. Further, multiple shoots were induced from nodal explants of 15-d-old in vitro-grown seedlings on MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of IAA/IBA/NAA along with BAP. The maximum number of shoots (40.3±3.63) per explant was obtained on the initiation medium having hormonal combination of 0.05 mg/L IAA with 0.5 mg/L BAP. The elongated shoots were best rooted on MS basal medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/L IAA. The in vitro rooted plantlets survived (60-70%) during hardening and showed normal growth after transfer to soil under natural environment.
