Abstract: The use of 2,3,5,6- tetrachloroquinone (chloranil ) for the photometric titrimetric determination of xanthates has been described. The titrations performed at 415 nm are marked by two intersections at xanthate to reagent molar ratios of 2: 1 and 4: 1, thus giving an option of calculating the results on the bas is of either break. The method has successfully been applied in the analysis of two commercial formulations viz. potassium ethyl xanthate and sodium isopropyl xanthate for their active ingredient content. The method is accurate, less time-consuming and of wide applicability.
