|Abstract:||The periodate ion has been extensively used in oxidation of organic compounds, particularly in the oxidation of glycols1. The mechanism of oxidation of 1,2-diols by periodate has been shown2 to proceed by the way of covalent link involving a cyclic intermediate. This corresponds to an inner-sphere mechanism3. However, the literature on the mechanism of oxidation reactions of inorganic materials by periodate is scanty.|
