Abstract: <span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family: " times="" new="" roman";mso-fareast-font-family:"times="" roman";mso-ansi-language:="" en-gb;mso-fareast-language:en-us;mso-bidi-language:ar-sa"="" lang="EN-GB">An eco-friendly process for the synthesis of 4,5-dihydro-9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene-2-carbalaldehyde (rheinal) from 1,8-dihydroxy-3-(hydroxymethyl)-9,10-anthracenedione (aloe-emodin) <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">via</i> aerial oxidation in presence of catalysts such as oxovanadium, copper(II) salen or enzymes containing copper(II) <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">i.e.</i> laccase is described.</span>
