Abstract: Photochemical oxidation of 7-methoxy-3-phenyl-2-[(<i>E</i>)-2-(thiophen-2-yl)ethenyl]-4<i>H</i>-chromen-4-one <b style="">4</b> in methanol containing iodine in the presence of air afforded 9-methoxy-5-thiophenyl-12<i style="">H</i>-benzo[<i style="">a</i>] xanthene <b style="">5</b>. The structure of the photo products was confirmed by IR, UV-Vis, <sup>1</sup>H NMR and mass spectra. A suitable mechanism has been proposed.
