| Abstract: | Diarrhoea is one of the deadliest epidemics known in human history. This normal looking disease was first described by the medical
practitioners of ancient India. Description of various types of diarrhoea and their treatment is found in many ancient epics of Vedic and post Vedic period. At present also, this epidemic is in existence at large and is responsible for most of the deaths in developing countries. This is a very deadly and infectious epidemic, which spreads by contaminated water. Only four types of diarrhoea are known in the modern medical
sciences, however, in ancient Indian medical sciences such as Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and other systems of medicines, about 20 types of diarrhoea are described. Present study is based on the methods of treatment of diarrhoea by Ayurvedic, ethnomedicinal, household or herbal
remedies. This paper includes 24 ethno-medicinal methods (household remedies) for the treatment of various kinds of diarrhoea. Identity of medicinal plants, their botanical names & family, local names, useful parts, method of usage and number of patients under treatment are also included in this study. Many treatment methods out of these are only carried on by means of oral knowledge from generation to generation,
therefore their collection and documentation at one place can be vital and useful for the herbal treatment methods of various types of diarrhoea.
