Abstract: In this study, grains of two buckwheat species: Fagopyrum esculentum (IC37309) and Fagopyrum tataricum (var. himpriya) were phytochemically investigated for their nutritional, and antioxidant potential for their use as functional foods. Methanolic extracts of grains of two Fagopyrum species showed higher phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) analysis presented these grains as a good source of minerals. This work demonstrated that grains of Fagopyrum species under study possess high protein, carbohydrate, phenolic content and antioxidative potential thus can be a good source of nutrition.
