|Abstract:||Iodine has been found to be an effective catalyst for protection of -hydroxy acids under mild reaction conditions. Various -hydroxy acids could be protected using cyclohexanone derivatives in high yield in presence of a catalytic amount of iodine at room temperature. This method has further been extended for the synthesis of -hydroxy lactone from l-(+)-malic acid.|
