Abstract: A new series 2-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-6-substitutedthieno[2,3-b]quinolines 4 have been synthesized by a one-step process in which 2-(chloromethyl)-1H-benzimidazole 2/2-(mercaptomethyl)-1H-benzimidazoles 6 undergo nucleophilic substitution and cyclisation with 2-mercaptoquinoline-3-carbaldehyde 1/2-chloroquinoline-3-carbaldehyde 5. The compounds have been synthesized by two methods to select a method of higher yield. The newly synthesized compounds have been characterized by IR, CHNS analysis, LC-MS and 1H NMR and also screened for antibacterial activity.
