Abstract: | A bis-rhodamine piperazine conjugate has been synthesized in good yields as a pale yellow solid. The metal-free compound does not show any fluorescence upon excitation. However, specifically in presence of Hg2+ ion in aqueous ethanol, the color changes to pink and it exhibits high fluorescence upon excitation at 520 nm. Presence of other biologically relevant metal ions in the system does not affect the fluorescence output to any significant extent. Thus, this compound can be used as a chromogenic and fluorogenic sensor for Hg2+ ion in aqueous ethanol medium. |
