Abstract: The 'Flame of the Forest', <b><i>Butea monosperma</i> (Lam.) Kuntze</b> syn. Butea frondosa Koen. ex Roxb.(Hindi- Dhak, Palas) is considered to be one of the most beautiful trees of India. When in full bloom the tree sheds all its leaves and the branches are covered with scarlet red flowers giving the tree its name Flame of the Forest. Rare mutants with white and yellow flowers have also been reported.
