Abstract: Heterosubstituted oxadiazoles and pyrazolones derivatives have been synthesized by reaction of 3,5-dichlorobenzo[<i style="">b</i>]­thiophene-2-carbohydrazide <b style="">1</b> and arylaldehydes in dioxane to afford (<i style="">E</i>)-<i>N</i>’-Arylmethylidene-3,5-dichlorobenzo[<i style="">b</i>]thiophene-2-carbohydrazides <b style="">2a-k</b>. Compounds <b style="">2a-k</b> on reaction with acetic anhydride give 5-(3,5-dichlorobenzo[<i style="">b</i>]thiophen-2-yl)-2-aryl-3-acetyl-(2<i style="">H</i>)1,3,4-oxadiazoles <b style="">3a-k</b>. Furthermore, compound <b style="">1</b> on reaction with Ethyl (2<i>E</i>)-3-oxo-2-arylhydrazinylidene butanoate in presence of glacial acetic acid gives (4<i>E</i>)-2-[(3,5-dichloro­benzo[<i style="">b</i>]thiophen-2-yl)carbonyl]-5-methyl-4-arylhydrazinylidene-2,4-dihydro-3<i>H</i>-pyrazolone <b style="">4a-k</b>.<b style=""> </b>Their IR, <sup>1</sup>H NMR, mass spectral data<b style=""> </b>and elemental analysis are in accord with assigned structure. All the newly synthesized compounds have been screened for their antimicrobial activity and antitubercular activity.
