| Abstract: | Lipases (triacylglycerol lipase, EC 3.1.1.3)
catalyse the hydrolysis of triglycerides to di-glycerides, monoglycerides, glycerol
and fatty acids. In non-aqueous
media, these enzymes also catalyse esterification, interesteriflcation and
transesterification. This versatility makes the lipases potential biocatalysts
in many industrial applications. This review describes the recent advances in
the use of yeasts as expression systems to produce high levels of recombinant
microbial lipases. Some expression systems such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae and
Pichia pastoris are reviewed and compared. Also, cell-surface display
systems as novel methods to construct whole cell biocatalysts are highlighted. |
