Abstract: Several new 4-aryl-3-chloro-1-[(5-nitroindazol-1-yl) acetamido]-2-oxo-azetidines<b style=""> 4a-l</b> have been synthesized from 2-(5-nitroindazol-1-yl) acetamidyl amino arylidenes <b style="">3a-l</b>. The reactions have been carried out by both conventional as well as microwave method. The structures of all these compounds are confirmed by IR, <sup>1</sup>H and <sup>13</sup>C&nbsp;NMR, FAB-mass spectra and also by microanalytical data. All the synthesized compounds have been screened for their antibacterial activity against <i style="">Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis </i>and <i style="">Salmonella typhi </i>and antifungal activity against <i style="">Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium citrinum and Fusarium oxysporum. </i>Some of the synthesized compounds exhibit significant antibacterial and antifungal activities.
