Abstract: The Knoevenagel type condensation reactions of phenanthrenequinone with imidazolidinone, thiazolidinone and isoxazolone derivatives have been described. The newly synthesized products have been characterized by spectral data. The exclusive formation of anti-configuration of monocondensation product has been explained on the basis of AM1 calculations. Some of the products have been screened for antimicrobial activity.
