Abstract: The Knoevenagel type condensation reactions of phenanthrenequinone with imidazolidinone, thiazolidinone and isoxazolone derivatives have been described. The newly synthesized products have been characterized by spectral data. The exclusive formation of <i>anti-</i>configuration of monocondensation product has been explained on the basis of AM1 calculations. Some of the products have been screened for antimicrobial activity.
