Abstract: To ensure reproducible quality of herbal products, proper control of starting material is utmost essential. The first step towards ensuring quality of starting material is authentication. Thus, in recent years there has been a rapid increase in the standardization of selected medicinal plants of potential therapeutic significance. Despite the modern techniques, identification of plant drugs by pharmacognostic studies is more reliable. Abrus precatorius Linn. (Family-Fabaceae), commonly known as Indian Liquorice, is an important medicinal plant and its seeds are used in various forms. In present study analysis of morphological characters, organoleptic evaluation of powders, histochemical reactions, determination of ash values, extractive values with water and ethanol of the powders, geochemical analysis, fluorescence analysis, behaviour of the powder with various chemical reagent and phytochemical studies on the seeds have been carried out. These studies will provide referential information for identification of this important crude drug.
