Abstract: Catalytic amounts of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) catalyze the condensation of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds to afford arylmethylidene products under the grindstone method. The reactions go to completion within 1-5 min at 26ºC and give products in excellent yield.
