Title: Synthesis and biological evaluation of some hydrazones and carbazones of indane-1,3-dione

Abstract:  Diethyl phthalate on treatment with ethyl acetate in sodium ethoxide gives sodium salt of ester derivative, which on neutralization in presence of sulphuric acid  affords indane-1,3-dione 1. Various hydrazines and carbazides on condensation with 1 in ethanol under reflux furnish the corresponding hydrazones and carbazones 2a-g. The structures of the compounds have been established by IR and 1H NMR spectral data. All the synthesized compounds have been evaluated for their anticoagulant and antimicrobial activities. Among these, compounds 2b and 2c have shown significant anticoagulant activity. All the compounds exhibited mild to moderate antimicrobial activities. Among these compounds 2a and 2g are found to have antimicrobial activities comparable to that of standard drugs used.
