Title: Establishing content awareness evaluation criteria for library websites: a case study of Indian academic library websites

Authors: Shukla, Akhandanand; Tripathi, Aditya

Abstract: Examines status of content on websites of libraries’
belonging to Indian academic institutions. Establishes a method to measure
Overall Website Performance Calculation (OWPC) and Criteria-wise Website
Performance Calculation (CWPC) of library websites. Comparative study of 20
central universities and 19 institutes of national importance including Indian
Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs)
academic libraries from India suggest that the library websites of institutes
of national importance have better content awareness than central university
library websites as per the identified criteria. The criteria studied would be
helpful for librarians and webmasters to improve content awareness status of
their library websites.

Web based information retrieval pattern of doctoral students in Calicut University

Title: Web based information retrieval pattern of doctoral students in Calicut University

Authors: Mohamed, Haneefa K; George, Sheena

Abstract: A structured questionnaire survey of 104 full-time doctoral students in Calicut University reveals that majority of the doctoral students belonging to science departments access the web daily. Most of the doctoral students search the web with simple keywords. Google is the most preferred search engine followed by Yahoo. The use of traditional library resources (print based)among the doctoral students belonging to science departments has decreased considerably. Majority of the doctoral students are not fully satisfied with access to web-based information resources and indicated ‘slow internet accessibility’ as the irmain reason for dissatisfaction. The findings of this study would assist universities in India to develop strategies and policies that could make better use of web-based resources for education and research.

Approaches to machine translation

Title: Approaches to machine translation

Authors: Tripathi, Sneha; Sarkhel, Juran Krishna

Abstract: Accessibility to other language web
documents has always been a concern for information professionals. Many
translation tools such as Babelfish and Google Translator are extensively used
by librarians and information professionals to meet the varying demand of their
users. These tools though do not produce exact translated verse but provides
gist of the information that could be used by the librarians to understand the
type of information contained in the document. Thus, it is important for
librarians and information professionals to know about the various
possibilities available for translation as well as the technology being used
for it. The papers follow ups the different approaches used for mechanization
of translation process along with a discussion over their features and
limitations. The study concludes with
the remark that dependency of library and information professionals over available
translation tools should be up to certain extent, i.e., only for the initial
sorting of the document. The translation
tools available cannot be used as regular content analysis tool.

Title: Information as an enabler for improving the social status of citizens

Authors: Jeevan, V K J

Abstract: Compares the status of India with USA,
South Asia and the World based on selected
social parameters. Education has emerged as a very active and investment
intensive area in India. Some statistics on the education scene are
presented. Provides an illustrative list
of information transforming projects as well as people. Finds that the neo-rich
in India
are more convinced about the need of technology to address socio-economic
problems and are aware of the value of information in tackling social issues.
Discusses some of the possible challenges and probable solutions that come in
the way of information being used as an enabler for improving the social status
of citizens.
