Title: USE OF INTERNET BY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF P D A COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, GULBARGA

Authors: TADASAD, P G; MAHESWARAPPA, B S; ALUR, SEEMA A

Abstract: The present study surveys and reports the use of internet by one hundred and ninety-three undergraduate students of engineering. Observes that, the internet use is confined to general or recreational purposes and its
potential in supporting curricular requirements has not been realized by the students. The use of Internet at college is being made by very few students and this needs to be increased. Also Internet facility should be extended to library, as it has become an important source of information, facilitating effective communication and being a major information retrieval tool. Concludes that awareness needs to be created among the students for using Internet in addition to the library facilities and training is to be provided to acquaint students with Internet and its resources.

Title: ELECTRONIC RESOURCE SHARING IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES

Authors: K, Manjunatha; Shivalingaiah, D.

Abstract: In the age of digital evolution and escalating price of electronic information, resource sharing is critical for effective functioning of libraries. Increased availability of information in digital format and high costs of journal subscription compels the libraries to work together.Technical advancements provide a platform for digital resource sharing and offer many opportunities for librarians to become more technical and professional. This paper attempts to identify the needs and factors influencing the electronic resource sharing. Also presents the requirements and strategies for effective resource sharing in academic libraries.

INDIAN JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY AND ALLIED SCIENCES: AN ANALYSIS OF CITATION PATTERN

Title: INDIAN JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY AND ALLIED SCIENCES: AN ANALYSIS OF CITATION PATTERN

Authors: Koley, Susanta; Sen, B.K.

Abstract: The present study covers 457 citations appended to 26 research articles published in the four issues of the quarterly Indian Journal of Physiology and Allied Sciences, vol. 55(200 1). The articles are contributed by 75 authors (74 - Indian). From the citation count it appears that the solo research in physiology is quite substantial (about 24%). Though about 77% of the work is the result of team research, the team size is found to be small ranging from 2 to 5. Of the citations, 76.81 per cent relate to journal articles, 18.59 to monographs, and the rest to conference papers, theses, etc. The ratio of Indian to foreign citations is found to be almost 1:6. Of the total citations, 4.59 percent are author self citations, and 2.84 percent are journal self citations. Of the citing articles one is single- authored,10 are two-authored, 9 three-authored, 4 four-authored, and one each five- authored and six-authored. No collaboration was noticed in the case of 23 citing articles. The remaining 3 articles were the results of two-institution collaboration.

Title: CORE JOURNALS IN THE FIELD OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

Authors: Kherde, Mohan R.

Abstract: There are 1,300 journals of Library and Information Science being published all over the world. No single library can afford to procure all these journals. Bibliometric studies enable to make a judicious selection from the large number of journals. The present study analyses the citations appended to articles that appeared in popular Indian library and information science journals during the period 1996 and 2001 and attempts to identify the core periodicals in the field of library and information science. The study reveals that Annals of Library and Information Science (now Annals of Library and Information Studies) is most popular Indian Journal among researchers where as College and Research Libraries is the most cited foreign journal.
