Plant genetics and breeding research: Scientometric profile of selected countries with special reference to India

Title: Plant genetics and breeding research: Scientometric profile of selected countries with special reference to India

Authors: Garg, K.C.; Kumar, S.; Bhatia, V.K.; Ramasubramanian, V.; Kumar, Amrender; Kumari, Jyoti

Abstract: Analysis
of 32,574 papers published by USA,
UK, China, India
and Brazil
in the field of ‘plant genetics and breeding’

research
during 2005-2009 indicates that USA
produced the highest number of publications followed by China. The
impact

of
research output as seen by the values of different impact indicators is highest
for UK.
The sub-domains of emphasis of

research
shifted in 2009 as compared to 2005 for all countries. India
contributed about 9 percent to the world publication

output.
Indian output formed a part of the mainstream science as seen by the pattern of
publication and citation of the

research
output. The total Indian output originated from 1,806 institutions located in
different parts of the country. About 41

percent
of the total Indian output was concentrated among 23 institutions. Among the
institutions, international institutes

located
in India
had the highest impact. The proportion of single authored papers has decreased
considerably and the share

of internationally co-authored papers has
remained almost steady during the period of study.

Service quality in University of Colombo libraries: an assessment

Title: Service quality in University of Colombo libraries: an assessment

Authors: Somaratna, Sajeewanie D.; Peiris, Colin N.

Abstract: Survey
of 614 users of the University
of Colombo Library system
using a modified version of SERVQUAL was carried

out
to ascertain the views of library users about the service level. They were
asked to assess the actual service delivered by

the
library; to establish the importance of the service to them as users; and, to
identify to what extent the service met their

expectations.
Exploratory factor analysis with Varimax rotation was employed to identify
underlying dimensions of service

quality
of the Library and the best predictor of the overall service quality of the University of Colombo Library was

identified
by regression analysis. Finds that the service quality of the University of Colombo
 Library System was

represented
by seven dimensions and the best predictor of the overall service quality was
the dimension referred to as

“Collection
and Access”. This is the first user survey conducted in University Libraries in
Sri Lanka
to assess the service

quality through user perspectives,
discovering service quality factors.

IT skills among LIS professionals of medical libraries in India and Iran: A comparative study

Title: IT skills among LIS professionals of medical libraries in India and Iran: A comparative study

Authors: Farahi, Mina Tavassoli; Gandhi, R.T.D. Ramesh

Abstract: A
questionnaire-based survey was conducted to elicit IT skills needed for LIS
professionals working in medical, dental,

and
pharmacy colleges affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences
(RGUHS) in Karnataka, India; and Ministry

of
Health and Medical Education and Islamic Azad
University (MOHME & IAU), Iran. Results
revealed that all the skills

listed
under IT basics and, internet were considered important by medical librarians
in India and Iran. However,
skills in

working
with non-popular software packages in areas such as presentation, publishing,
and email were considered as

unimportant.
Concludes that Iranian LIS professionals’ IT skills requirement was higher than
that of Indian LIS

professionals.
Iranian professionals attributed more importance to the ability to use
non-popular software packages in some

areas, such as electronic mail, publishing,
presentation, and databases than their Indian counterparts did.

Research publications of National Metallurgical Laboratory during the year 2001- 2010 - A study on citation patterns

Title: Research publications of National Metallurgical Laboratory during the year 2001- 2010 - A study on citation patterns

Authors: Sahu, A.K.; Goswami, N.G.; Choudhary, B.K.

Abstract: R&D publication growth, its characteristics, research impact, quality, citation
value, category of journals, core research

areas,
characteristics of productive authors with reference to the National
Metallurgical Laboratory, an R&D organisation

under
CSIR, India
is analysed. Based on data obtained from the Science Citation Indices, it was
found that the highest

number
of 120 papers was published by the laboratory in the year 2010, out of which 28
papers received 62 citations during

the
same year for the papers published by the laboratory whereas the highest
citation received was 738 from 88 out of 107

papers
published in 2006 as on April 2011. The average number of publications per year
was 88.1 for the period under

consideration
and the average citation per paper was 5.02. The analysis shows that the
majority of the authors of this

laboratory
published their research work in joint authorship (96.48%). The authors mostly
prefer to publish their research

findings
in reputed international journals rather than Indian journals. 72.95 percent
citing authors are from foreign countries

and
only 27.05 percent are Indians. Therefore, the R&D contributions made by
scientists of CSIR-NML had a global impact

in
the field of metallurgy and materials science. High citations received were in
the areas of materials science, metallurgical

engineering,
nanoscience & nanotechnology and environmental engineering over the last
decades as observed during the

period 2001-2010. The h-index of the last
decade was 25.
