Title: Space management in TIFR library: a case study

Authors: Arya, Harsh Bardhan; Singh, Pratibha; Mishra, J.K.

Abstract: Discusses the importance of space management in support of the functions of special libraries and reviews current solutions on library space management by pinpointing their advantages and disadvantages. Introduces CR (Compact Racks) as a tool for library space management because of its capacity for analyzing spatial data and interactive information. Outlines a proposal that attempts to highlight the process of developing, implementing, maintaining, and utilizing a CR system for special libraries with reference to Scientific Information Resources Centre (SIRC), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

Abstract: Modes of occurrence of keywords devoted to the subject Fermi Liquid, which is a specific domain under the broad area of condensed matter physics was studied. Eight quantitative indicators have been defined and developed on the basis of some parameters associated with keywords and keyword clusters. At least three keywords with a common phrase have been defined as a keyword cluster in this study. The numerical values of the indicators have been calculated for 2562 keyword-clusters, 916 keyword-couples and 4329 single keywords in all, though only top 20 keywords/keyword clusters are selected in decreasing order of numerical values of each indicator for presenting in this paper. The keywords were extracted from titles and abstracts of 6371 research articles devoted to the subject Fermi Liquid, which were collected from the bibliographic database of INSPEC and COMPENDEX, over the time span of twenty years (1985-2004). In total, 67 keywords/keyword clusters are presented here, which appeared 160 times within top 20 ranks (8*20=160) against eight indicators. A keyword cluster consists of at least three keywords and 665 keywords as studied here. The keyword-couples consist of two keywords only. There is no question of forming any cluster by the single keywords. The variations of numerical values of all indicators with the rank of keyword/ keyword clusters are shown graphically. The mathematical functions followed by each variational pattern are also discussed.

Role of service sector information for micro-planning: a case study

Title: Role of service sector information for micro-planning: a case study

Authors: Ray, Partha Pratim; Biswas, Bidhan Ch.

Abstract: The principle of democratic decentralization has made districts as nodal points for the general administration and contributing to the welfare of the people. With the creation of District Planning Committee (DPC), the focus of development plan has been shifted from macro to micro level planning considering district or even Community Development (CD) block as basic administrative units. For proper planning, information of the existing service sector facilities and its assessment is essential. The present paper attempts to examine and assess availability, distribution and identify gaps in the development process of service sector facilities like education, library, transportation, posts and telegraph, health, drinking water, power supply of community development block, Bolpur-Srinikaten. The study was conducted on the basis of simple and relative weighted score of service sectors activities of the block under study. It is observed from the study that service sector facilities are unevenly distributed and knowledge-communication is the most neglected service sector in Bolpur-Srinikaten.

Authors: Madasamy, R.; Alwarammal, R.

Abstract: Data on doctoral degrees awarded in library and information science during 2003-2008 was collected from University News. Analysis of data reveals that Andhra Pradesh has produced the higher number of Ph.Ds during the period and information sources & services, user studies, library management and bibliometrics are the leading subject areas on which most of the research has been carried out. Concludes that more doctoral research needs to be carried out in the areas of digital libraries and ICT applications.
