Effect of oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia serrata (Kundur) on renal functions in Albino rats

Title: Effect of oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia serrata (Kundur) on renal functions in Albino rats

Authors: Alam, Mahe; Javed, K; Jafri, MA

Abstract: Oleo-gum-resin
of Boswellia serrata Roxb. (Burseraceae) locally called ‘Kundur’, is one of the ingredients in
certain Unani formulations used in renal diseases. In the present study, the
effect of Kundur and its methanol
soluble (MS), and methanol insoluble (MINS) fractions were investigated on
Gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in Albino rats. The renal effects of Kundur and its fractions were studied by
monitoring urea and creatinine blood levels.

Aminoglycoside antibiotics including
Gentamicin are widely used in the treatment of Gram-negative bacterial
infections. A major complication of the use of these drugs is nephrotoxicity. In the current study,
treatment with Kundur its methanol soluble (MS) and methanol insoluble (MINS) fractions
significantly prevented the rise in blood urea and serum creatinine levels. Our
results suggest that Kundur and its
(MS) methanol soluble fraction induced renoprotective action against Gentamicin
induced nephrotoxicity probably due to the presence of compounds possessing
antioxidant potential.

Comparative clinical evaluation of the antidyslipidaemic effects of Lashunadi compound and yogic exercises in patients of metabolic syndrome

Title: Comparative clinical evaluation of the antidyslipidaemic effects of Lashunadi compound and yogic exercises in patients of metabolic syndrome

Authors: Singh, Harbans; Sharma, Anjali; Johar, Smita

Abstract: In the present clinical trial, two groups of
patients of metabolic syndrome have been studied to evaluate the therapeutic
and antidyslipidaemic effect of Ayurvedic herbs and Yogic exercises. The group A of 25 patients was
given Lashunadi compound containing equal quantity of Lashuna (Allium sativum Linn.), Gugullu (Commiphora wightii Hook.Ex. Stocks Engl) and Isabgol (Plantago ovate Forsk.) husk in the dosage of 6 gm, twice daily
with lukewarm water. The group B of
25 patients was advised yoga therapy. The trial was conducted for two months
and lipid and anthropometric profiles (body weight, body mass index & skin
fold thickness) were periodically evaluated to assess the therapeutic and
antidyslipidaemic effects of drugs under trial. At the end of the trial, group
A exhibited its therapeutic and antidyslipidaemic efficiency over the group B.

Title: Bala taila parisheka – A traditional approach in wound healing

Authors: Tripathy, R N; Otta, S P; Siddram, A

Abstract: A clinical study of BalaTaila (sesame oil processed with Sida cordifolia and some other indigenous compound) Pariseka (instillation) in wound healing
was conducted on 30 patients and were divided into two groups of 15 each. Group
I (trial group) treated by Bala Taila
local application once daily & Group II (control group) treated by the
cleaning with normal saline. Sterile dry gauze was used for dressing with an
aim to assess the effectiveness of BalaTaila
Parisheka in wound healing. Results exhibited that there is, reduction of
pain (85%), swelling (80%), changes to normal colour (84.44%), reduction in
discharge (82.92%), appearance of granulation (86.66%) and size of wound
reduced to (79.41%). The result of Bala Taila was found statistically
significant in the process of wound healing.

Title: Efficacy of massage with roghan seer in motor recovery in hemiplegia secondary to ischaemic stroke

Authors: Haji, Amanullah; Anwar, Mohd; Ansari, Abdul Nasir; Sofi, Ghulamuddin; Shah, Altaf Hussain

Abstract: A randomized placebo controlled study was
designed to evaluate the efficacy of massage with Roghan Seer
(a polyherbal Unani formulation), in motor recovery
in Hemiplegia secondary to ischaemic stroke. Forty patients of ischaemic stroke
diagnosed radiologically, presenting with hemiplegia (Falije Nisfi) were randomly allocated to Group A (test) and
Group B (control); comprising 20 patients each. Patients in Group A were
massaged with Roghan Seer whereas patients in Group B were massaged with
white petroleum jelly. The study reveals that there was significant
improvement in voluntary movements of lower limb (p<0.05) and basic mobility
(p<0.05) in Group A as compared to Group B. There was no significant
improvement in voluntary movements of upper limb in both Group A and B
(p>0.05).
